The AI Gas Rush: Risks and Implications of “Bring Your Own Power”

The race to scale AI has triggered an unprecedented increase in electricity demand. To bypass wait times for grid service, data center developers are increasingly pursuing “Bring Your Own Power” (BYOP), where they procure dedicated energy resources rather than relying solely on grid power.

·

Our research found the vast majority of these projects are fossil-fueled: with gas expected to power approximately 80% of energy generation from BYOP projects coming online in the next five years. In total, we identify 177 GW of planned BYOP gas capacity, enough to power 65% of all U.S. homes. Conservatively, ozone and particulate matter pollution from these projects could cause an estimated $5–10B in monetized health damages each year.

In this report, the Better Data Center and Earthjustice explore the risks of the BYOP buildout—including their operation outside of laws and regulations designed to protect people and planet—analyze recent federal and state policy approaches around BYOP, and provide potential intervention points for communities. See the Executive Summary and Report Overview from Earthjustice for more.
